Misty Hills and Flavours of Kerala
Our first stop was Chinnakanal, a quiet village tucked in Kerala’s misty hills. The air was cool and fragrant with the scent of wet earth and spices. Our homestay was simple but inviting, with wooden verandas overlooking rolling tea plantations. Here, the Kerala food experience began with a feast of sadya, a traditional vegetarian banquet served on banana leaves. We savoured the delicate balance of flavours: tangy pickles, creamy coconut chutneys, and the soft, fluffy appam paired with vegetable stew.
Breakfasts brought the comforting warmth of puttu, steamed cylinders of rice flour and coconut, alongside spicy chickpea curry. But the highlight was the coastal influence: fresh seafood cooked with local spices. One evening, we tried kappa fish curry Kerala style, tapioca mash paired with a fiery, tangy fish curry. The texture of the kappa was dense yet soft, a perfect foil to the curry’s sharpness.
We also tasted toddy, a local palm wine, freshly tapped and slightly sour with a hint of sweetness. Sitting with our hosts, we learned how toddy was more than a drink; it was a social ritual, a taste of Kerala’s rural life.
Coastal Flavours and Forts of Maharashtra
Next, our journey led us to Maharashtra’s Konkan coast and the historic Vijaydurg Fort. The salty sea breeze mingled with the aroma of Malvani cuisine, known for its bold, spicy fish curries and fried seafood. We quickly fell in love with rice bhakri, a thick rice flatbread that paired perfectly with fiery curries.
We sampled bombil fry, a local Bombay duck fish, crisped to perfection with a crunchy coating of spices. Alongside, we enjoyed solkadhi, a cooling pink drink made from kokum and coconut milk, which balanced the heat of the food. One afternoon, a local vendor offered us a refreshing cashew-based drink, its sweet and nutty flavour unlike anything we had tasted before.
Our coastal stays were simple beach cottages where mornings began with the sound of waves and evenings ended with conversations with fishermen and cooks. These human connections deepened our appreciation for Maharashtra coastal food and the stories behind each dish.

Laid-Back Evenings and Spices of Goa
Goa offered a change of pace with its laid-back vibe and vibrant Goan cuisine. We found ourselves dining on the beach, where the salty air mixed with the rich aroma of prawn curry and vindaloo, a spicy pork dish with Portuguese roots.
Desserts like bebinca, a layered coconut milk cake, provided a sweet contrast to the fiery meals. Evenings were spent in taverns, where we tasted feni, a local spirit distilled from cashew or coconut. The sharp, fruity flavour of feni sparked lively cultural exchanges with locals, who shared stories of Goa’s unique blend of Indian and Portuguese heritage.
We appreciated how Goan cuisine was not just about food but about the relaxed lifestyle, the music, and the warmth of the people.
Heritage and Heartiness in Karnataka
Our final destination was Chitradurga in Karnataka, where the landscape shifted to rocky hills and historic forts. Here, we explored Karnataka's local food, starting with jolada rotti, a flatbread made from jowar (sorghum), served with spicy chutneys and vegetable sides like ennegayi, a stuffed eggplant curry.
We tried bisi bele bath, a hearty rice and lentil dish cooked with tamarind and spices, perfect for the cooler evenings. The most memorable experience was tasting ragi mudde, Karnataka's finger millet balls with a dense, chewy texture. Eating ragi mudde was unlike any other meal; it required dipping into spicy sambar or chutney, creating a satisfying blend of textures and flavours.
Our heritage stay was in a restored haveli near the fort, where we enjoyed meals prepared by local cooks and learned about the region’s history. The fort visit itself offered panoramic views and a glimpse into Karnataka’s past, enriching our Indian cultural travel experiences.

The Journey's Essence
Food and drink shaped our journey in profound ways. Each meal was a doorway to understanding the people, their history, and their environment. Our experience showed how curated India trips can reveal the country’s diversity through its food, from the misty hills of Kerala to the rocky forts of Karnataka.
For young travelers and food lovers seeking authentic Indian food travel, this journey offers a blueprint: embrace local flavours, stay with locals, and let each bite tell a story. Our adventure invites others to explore India not just as a destination but as a living, breathing feast.
With every dish, we connected with the heart of India, uncovering stories that resonate far beyond the plate. Our culinary adventure was not just about tasting; it was about experiencing the rich tapestry of life that India has to offer.
